"Sultry, searing, scalding and sexy" my words for Sweet Suzi and her red-hot Blues Experience. Bernard Allison likens Suzi to "a bluesy/soulful mix of Etta James, Janis Joplin and Koko Taylor." She and her tight band lead a pack of excellent Long Island blues bands, with a strong rhythm section and horns that remind me of early Blood, Sweat & Tears - all this with tasty guitar licks and a heaping helping of good ol' funk. Sweet Suzi comes out swinging with her feisty version of Son Seals' "Bad Axe,” augmented by a quick and tight horn section with a sharp axe solo. “Does Your Wife Know?” is a slow, sensuous conversation between two cheating lovers, and Suzi takes on a Billie Holiday classic ballad, “God Bless the Child.” A bit more relaxed and smooth here, Suzi shows she has a sensational voice and doesn’t have to go over the top to deliver the goods. Saving the best for last, Suzi tears down the house with her tribute to Etta James on “I’d Rather Go Blind.” To see her do this number live is to see a crowd of people breaking out into a hot sweat as she belts out the blues. Suzi’s musical selection is superb - mixing in originals and interpretations, she has quite an arsenal at her disposal - the blues the way it oughta be. - Ken Shankman Elmore Magazine |
